Consider the humble calendar. The Ancient Egyptians had calendars. (More than one!) They gave us two lunar calendars, and then the first modern solar civil calendar, which is still used today. This lecture by Dr Lester Cowley presents the history of these calendars. Lester is retired and is a Research Associate of the Department of Computing Sciences at Mandela University in Port Elizabeth. We are also going to learn about how the Ancient Egyptians invented and measured hours. This story goes back more than 5,000 years! This lecture was filmed at the July 22, 2025 meeting of The Egyptian Society of South Africa at St George’s Grammar School in Mowbray, Cape Town.
